I researched many websites for Literacy and Physical education, to be honest when I first started to researching I couldn't really find too much about my teaching area. Most of the sources were about Technology and Physical Education than I started to find some links from Canadian websites.The Canadian Sport for Life Foundation defines the term Physical Literacy "...is the development of fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills that permit a child to move confidently and with control, in a wide range of physical activity, rhythmic (dance) and sport situations".
Looking at this definition, it can lead us to the conclusion that children's fitness levels are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to term "Physical Literacy".
On other hand American Dr. Margaret Whitehead, a philosopher by training, has spent the better part of the last 30 years looking to define physical literacy and its impact on the future of physical education. Her extensive body of work defines physical literacy in terms of:
- physical competencies;the ability to read and respond to
- the environment and to others in interaction;
- the ability to use the body as an instrument of expression/ communication; and
- the ability to articulate/demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding of health.
Now I know that; general literacy skill is the ability to make meaning through reading, writing, visual aids, and reasoning and content literacy in physical education means that students can use general literacy skills to acquire knowledge in a specific movement, sport, or fitness context.
There is a power point presentation about Supporting Literacy through Physical Education, by Barbara F. Adams- Educational Consultant&Trainer -explains more about my teaching area.
I never thought there was even a term "physical literacy"...but you're definitions you presented here make sense. There are so many "literacies": computer, academic, multicultural...so why not physical! Thanks for sharing!
